Connexions
Connexions is the advice, guidance and support service for all young people aged 13-19 (or up to 25 for people with learning difficulties or disabilities). We are here to help young people prepare for their future, regardless of their background or abilities. Connexions ensures extra support is provided to those who need it, for whatever reason.
The central aim of Connexions is to provide information, advice and support to young people on any issues that concern them, to encourage more young people to continue in learning, find employment opportunities and realise their potential. This may include advice on everything from jobs, training, or courses, through to money, housing, drugs or other concerns.
Every young person is assigned to an identified lead person, in most cases this will
be a Connexions Personal Adviser. There are two Personal Advisers who work at Wentworth High School.
eet the Personal Advisers at Wentworth High Les Tandy – Senior Personal Adviser
I qualified as a Careers adviser in 1990, initially working for Wirral Careers Service with adults as well as young people both in and out of education. In 1994 I joined Salford Careers Service, later Connexions Salford, as a Careers Adviser working predominantly with pupils who had learning difficulties and disabilities. Since this time I have worked as an Personal Adviser in a number of Salford schools, colleges and special projects as well as Wentworth High School and a school for pupils with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
As a Senior Personal Adviser my role includes supporting my colleagues with their professional practice and continuous development as well as offering advice and guidance to young people on a wide range of issues.
I am presently working in Wentworth High on Wednesdays; however, I can always be contacted at Salford Connexions on other days of the week.
Emma Al-Hakim – Personal Adviser
I am a qualified Careers and Personal Adviser and I have worked with Salford Connexions since September 2003. I previously worked as a Town Planner in London and I used to be a learning mentor with the learning support unit of Watford Football Club.
I started working in Wentworth High School in January 2004. I am usually in Wentworth High School on Wednesdays and Fridays to see students for individual appointments. I can offer students information, advice and guidance about their career ideas and subject choices from year 9 onwards. I can also help young people with more personal problems. Most of the work I do in school focuses on working with Year 11 pupils, helping them to prepare for the transition to college, training or full time employment.
Information for parents and carers
National research shows parents and carers are the biggest influence on the career choices made by their children, so it’s important that you know about the options and choices they’ll need to make. Download a copy of the Connexions guide for parents and carers to find out more.
