English

Someone once described language as the garment of thought. This is very true and teachers in this faculty realise that we can do far more than help young people to read and write; speaking, listening and, most of all, thinking are vital skills for successfully living in the 21st century.

Our main concern, over the last few years, has been to bring our GCSE achievement closer to national levels. This is not just about improving teaching and learning but includes the necessity of providing a stimulating syllabus which the pupils enjoy and truly reflects their abilities. We have been fortunate to be a pilot school for the new Edexcel GCSE modular English syllabus. The improvement has been dramatic and this year we reached 61% A*-C grades.

We have not rested on our laurels in other matters, either. The Scheme of Work has been reworked throughout Key Stage Three and we have led the way in tracking pupils’ achievement using major educational initiatives such as Assessing Pupil Progress and Assessment for Learning.

Finally, we are currently developing web-based homework projects which will enable parents and pupils share goals and achievements creating an interest in education and language within the entire family.
