Our Trip to see the Mayor of Salford – Councillor Margaret Ann Morris

On Thursday 10th July, seven lucky pupils were invited to have tea with the Mayor of Salford at her Parlour at the Civic Centre.

We met the Mayor and Mayoress and Steve, who is the Mayor’s Attendant.

Whilst we were there Steve showed us the mace and told us some history about other things like the mayoral chains.  One interesting fact is that the Mayor and Mayoress are allowed to choose which chain to wear and they can even wear different ones each day if they wish!!

We also found out about the Mayor’s robes.  We saw the different ones and looked at some of the older robes that past Mayors have worn.  One was really heavy and was trimmed with real ermine fur.Mayor Morris

After that we went into the Council Chamber where we all chose a seat from the eight seats at the front.  When we sat down Steve told us what jobs our chairs had.  Sheldon was in the Mayor’s seat, Josh Wirth was the Mayor’s Chaplin, Jordan was the Minute Taker and we all had our job explained to us.

We then went back to the Parlour and had our photograph taken with the Mayor and the mace.  We had drinks and biscuits. We brought a kit-kat back for Mr Keeble!  Then we were given a Salford bag with presents in, such as a pencil, a ruler, a keyring and a toy.  We also got a copy of Salford’s Civic History for the library.

We enjoyed our visit and think that it would be a good opportunity for other pupils to go and find out how you can become a Councillor or Mayor.
