UK School Games – Held in Bristol and Bath 29th – 31st  August 2008

UK School Games

I was invited to compete in the UK School Games, an annual multi-sports competition for the country’s elite young athletes.

The UK School Games began in 2006 and has since grown bigger and bigger. The aim of the games is to get the country’s elite competitors in athletics, swimming, fencing, table tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, hockey, judo and badminton ready to represent Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympics and also to give athletes who may have not done such an event before an idea of what to expect.

For me the Games began on Thursday, when the Manchester area’s athletes met up at the JJB Soccerdome for the journey down to Bath.  This was followed that night by the opening ceremony, which was hosted by Jill Douglas and featured a parade of all the competitors competing in the Games.  There was also a parade of past Olympic athletes and the official opening of the Games by Beijing double gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and the patron of the School Games, Jason Gardner.

On the Friday, the team trained with the coaches, including Commonwealth Games silver medallist Susan Moncrieff.

Saturday saw the actual beginning of the athletics competition.  I had been due to race in a 200m heat, but this had been cancelled and would instead go straight to a final on the Sunday.

On Sunday came my turn to race, and I ran in the Ambulant 200m against 5 other top athletes with differing disabilities.  I came a respectable fourth, with a time of 32.01 seconds.

Coming away from these games I have realised the hard work needed to truly perform and succeed at the very highest level.  However it has also made me more determined to press on in athletics and to have the honour of representing my country in London in 2012.

James Cook
