Languages Day at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston

In July a small group of Year 8 Students took part in a special Languages Day at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.

Mrs Bardsley and Mr Kay met us just before 8.30 am and we were all so excited because the weather was really sunny and we did not have to wear our school uniforms. langThe coach wasn't a full size one but we had it all to ourselves which was brilliant. The driver used his sat nav to find the university buildings but, even so, it was very hard to find. Other schools were waiting next to us and then our special guides arrived to escort us to the reception area. Our guide was called Louise. She was very helpful and she stayed with us at all times during the day.

Our first experience was the meeting and greeting session in the main lecture theatre. Some other schools had forgotten to tell their students they could wear non-uniform and they were really disappointed.lang

We were allowed to do three activities during the day and I was most looking forward to Urdu in the afternoon. My uncle speaks Urdu in his job sometimes but I could not speak any at all before I went to Preston.

In the morning we learned Italian by playing games with the lady. Some of us won prizes for our teams. Our team was definitely the best at most of the games.  Then, after refreshments, we went to a multi-cultural event where we got the chance to experience what other people do in their own communities. Some of the boys got dressed up in ethnic clothing and I tried some Japanese art.

In the afternoon it was time for Urdu with Mr Iqbal. He was really patient and I learned at least ten new words to say from memory. It made me realise just how much I already know from my lessons in school.

There was a special prize-giving ceremony at the end of the afternoon and the lecturers and guides told us how well we had done.I would say that it was a very worthwhile day and I would definitely recommend it for next year's year 8 groups.
