Maths
The mathematics department at Wentworth consists of 5 full time specialist maths teachers who each teach in their own room that is equipped with an interactive whiteboard. All of the staff are committed to teaching maths in ways that will help children to appreciate the beauty of the subject.
We strive to help pupils understand mathematics rather than memorising it. We feel that this approach prepares young people, better for a world where an ability to solve problems, manipulate figures and use the day to day skills associated with money and time is invaluable.
All of our pupils study the same curriculum at present and all complete either the Edexel G.C.S.E modular or linear examination at the end year 11.
The higher ability mathematicians in each year will have the to enter into a number of externally set Mathematical challenges, as well as opportunities to visit Mathematics faculty at local Red Brick Universities.
Year 9 mathematics SAT results have always been good. They are regularly amongst the top 10% when compared with similar schools nationally. We are very proud of this, as are the pupils but we now want to get into the top 5%
.
We live in a constantly changing world. This is particularly so in the world of education. Mathematics can often be a driving force for change and a tool to help us cope with it. We are committed to ensuring that your children get the very best deal possible.
******************************************
Each year the Mathematics department chooses a small number of gifted and talented mathematicians to compete in the UKMT Mathematics Challenge.
These elite students compete against thousands of pupils from over 3000 schools to try and achieve a gold, silver or bronze certificate. The UKMT Intermediate Mathematics Challenge was contested in February 2012 and we are proud to say that five of our year 11 pupils achieved certificates.
Congratulations go to Freya Aspinall who received a silver certificate as well as the certificate for being best in school.
Certificates go to;
Freya Aspinall Silver and Best in School
Jonathan Barrett Silver
Aiden Mccarthy Silver
Bethany Ripley Bronze
Dalal Barahman Bronze
Good luck to the 40 pupils that entered the UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge in April 2012.

"Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty - a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture."
