Maths

"Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty - a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture."
Bertrand Russell 1872 - 1970

The mathematics department at Wentworth consists of 6 full time specialist maths teachers who each teach in their own room that is equipped with an interactive whiteboard. Our highly qualified intervention mentor works along side these teachers, supporting classes, withdrawing targeted students for short blocks and generally keeping us all on our toes.  All of the staff are committed to teaching maths in ways that will help children to appreciate the beauty of the subject.
We strive to help pupils understand mathematics rather than memorising it. We feel that this approach prepares young people, better for a world where an ability to solve problems, manipulate figures and use the day to day skills associated with money and time is invaluable.
There is a wide variety of experience within the teachers, with two newly qualified younger teachers bringing new ideas, approaches and untold enthusiasm, who can rely on the experience of the rest of their more mature, in years at least, colleagues.
All of our pupils study the same curriculum at present and all take the Edexel G.C.S.E examination at the end of year 11.
We are currently investigating the value of entering some of our students in November of their year 11 and  are also considering entering some pupils in future years, into a modular examination.
The higher ability mathematicians in each year will have the opportunity to study G.C.S.E statistics in year 11. We want to prepare all the students who wish to study maths at a higher level for this. A qualification in statistics along with a sound mathematical knowledge opens up many doors and gives students access to many of the 'ologies' available at college and university.

Year 9 mathematics SAT results have always been good. They are regularly amongst the top 10% when compared with similar schools nationally. We are very proud of this, as are the pupils but we now want to get into the top 5%.

Lots of pupils have had opportunities to sit externally set maths challenges and once again results are encouraging.

We live in a constantly changing world. This is particularly so in the world of education. Mathematics can often be a driving force for change and a tool to help us cope with it. We are committed to ensuring that your children get the very best deal possible.
