In January , a pupil of the school, Nathaniel Tetteh, who arrived here from Ghana a couple of years ago , asked if we could donate any obsolete but useable items to help his old school. He described a school that works very hard for its pupils with minimal resources but real ambitions to provide ‘a quality education in modern terms’. The school desperately wants to establish computer laboratories and equip additional classrooms as well as set up a Library.
Following Nathaniel’s initial discussions with school we contacted his father to discuss transport arrangements and made contact with the Headteacher of the school – Pentecostal Academy in Tamale , Ghana. Mr. Ali , the Principal, tells us that the school opened in 1995 with only 5 pupils and has grown to over 600 nursery , primary and junior secondary children. They hope to provide hostel facilities in the future so that children from rural areas can also access the education that they are offering – all of which is free. He provided photographs of events on the 10th anniversary of the school including pictures of groups of pupils to help us visualise the school and its situation .
Mrs. Lewis our Deputy Headteacher took on the project to collect as much useful equipment as possible from within school , and from other Salford schools as well as from individuals. The school at Manchester Children’s Hospital provided lots of equipment , as has St. Patricks Catholic Secondary School and Clarendon Rd Primary. The response from Wentworth school staff, parents , and Governors has been brilliant and we have even had items donated by members of the public who are related to pupils in school. We will be able to send approximately 35 – 40 computers, printers, scanners, several televisions and videos, overhead projectors, stereo systems, slide projectors , science kit, a range of other items including sports equipment and, last but by no means least, – lots of books!
The shipping company ( Allways Shipping) , and their associates ( Innercode who advised on packaging) ) have been incredibly helpful in organising the provision of a container for these items and in making sure we had the benefit of their ideas on the most efficient and safe way to package and pack the items . Send off day is planned for next Friday – April 7th when we hope to have a team of people to help with packing the container. Wentworth pupils and Salford citizens have a deserved reputation for supporting good causes and this is in their best tradition . Well done one and all! |
