Attendance Project 2005

For the 12 weeks leading up to Christmas 30 pupils were working with the Learning Support Unit and Learning Mentors to improve their attendance percentage, and with fantastic results!

Five pupils managed to gain a perfect score with another eleven pupils excelling with results at or above the national average. These pupils had all been selected because there was room for improvement in their attendance scores, which is exactly what we saw from them. With a little T.L.C and encouragement from the mentors, and a whole lot of effort from the pupils, scores to be very proud of were achieved.

Perhaps even more important than this is the fact that these efforts have continued on after the project, with twelve of the pupils are still comfortably above the national average. One pupil, who had started the project with a figure of sixty three percent, is yet to miss a moment!

The next project, with a new set of willing volunteers is under way. Let’s hope they all do just as well.

Learning Support Unit - Transition
As part of the school’s transition programme, six year 7 students have been involved in producing a promotional DVD for the school, with generous help from the staff at Buile Hill City Learning Centre. The 13 minute film will be shown to children, parents and staff in the local primary schools during the Key stage 2 to Key stage 3 transition in the Summer term.

The DVD has been produced by Georgina Tunn-Rutter, Joshua Wirth, Joe Tyrell, Nina Hamer, Nichola Bolton and Jake Griffiths and includes an interview with the Headteacher, Mr Keeble. During the project the students have had the opportunity to learn about the different roles in a film crew. They have experienced the demands of several of these roles during the planning, storyboarding, filming and editing of the film.

The DVD project has been a fantastic experience for those involved and they have worked hard to produce a film that shows the best that Wentworth has to offer to new pupils. They have produced a professional looking film, considering all aspects of school life and portraying our pride in our school.

Visit to the Barrier-Free Department

During the Autumn term Louise Franklin from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) visited the Barrier-Free Department. During the afternoon she toured the school building and facilities, spoke to support and teaching staff and held meetings with external agencies which regularly interact with the Department.

The following letter was received following her return to London:

Dear Mr Keeble

I wanted to write to let you know that I found my visit to Wentworth High on Monday extremely informative and was very impressed by the work of the Barrier Free Unit and Mrs Giller's team. It was particularly useful to meet Margaret Benger (Senior Physiotherapist) and Les Tandy (Connexions Personal Advisor) and hear about multi-agency working in practice and the challenges for disabled children at transition - a stage we know can be the most difficult for disabled young people and their families.

The central aim of my team at DfES is to increase the social inclusion of disabled children, improve their life chances and enable them to lead ordinary lives. I think that the Barrier Free Unit is an excellent example of good practice which meets all these aims.

Best wishes

This academic year has seen a record numbers of pupils applying and successfully receiving the honour of becoming a peer mentor. We now have 26 Peer mentors actively working in school. Their duties range from 1:1’s, merit shop, Playstation and Breakfast club monitors and many attend year 7 form times. We are so pleased with the standard of this year Peer Mentors. Their effort, enthusiasm and professionalism has been outstanding throughout. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the team on their positive impact on the school community.
It’s nearly time for year 9s to start thinking if they would like to become Peer Mentors. We will be sending out application forms shortly…
Good Luck!
