In January a pupil in year 11 (Nathaniel Tetteh), who comes from Ghana, came up with an idea to make a real difference to his old school – The Pentecostal Academy.
The Academy provides a free education for over 600 pupils from 4 – 18 years old and was desperately keen to try to set up a computer laboratory. Nathaniel described the resourcing difficulties that the school faced and asked if it would be possible to donate any obsolete computers (and any other unused resources) to help them maintain and improve the education that the Academy offers. Nathaniel’s family and his old school offered to fund the transport costs if we could collect together the essential items.
Over the following weeks of the Spring term we contacted other schools in Salford and, with their help and that of some parents, governors, staff and members of the community, we managed to put together a container load of items. The container included 38 PC monitors, 18 base units, lots of keyboards, several printers and 14 lap top computers, together with overhead projectors, televisions and videos, stereo systems, boxes of text books and library books, some sports equipment and even a karaoke machine!
The shipping company (Allways) were brilliant and on the staff Inset day, on the last day of term, a group of pupils gave up their time to help load up and securely pack the container under their expert guidance. Pupils even donated £130 towards transport costs from the previous day’s non-uniform fund raising.
The container arrived in Ghana on 3rd May and is currently awaiting release from the docks and onward transport to the school. We hope everything arrives in one piece and that it meets the needs of the school, with whom we will now maintain our links in the future. Well done Nathaniel for the initiative and thanks to all who contributed.
