Manchester United Ability Counts -Player of the Year

On Friday 28th April 2006, I went to the Greater Manchester Ability Counts League Awards in the Manchester Suite at Old Trafford.  These awards were to recognise the various abilities of all the players from Greater Manchester and Merseyside who took part during the season.

The guest of honour was Paul Scholes who handed out the medals to all the teams.

The First award was the “Fair Play” award which went to Tameside.  Following that, the teams in our league, the Under 16 Premiership, were awarded medals for taking part. Our team, Manchester United, came third in our league.

I received my medal from Paul Scholes and he congratulated me.

Another award was given for the “Manchester United Player of the Year 2006”, which I am pleased to say I won!
Our team, Manchester United, were also given awards to mark being runners-up in a cup competition; we lost 1-0 to Manchester City.
After the Presentations we had a disco. In all, I think we all had a good evening.

The Greater Manchester Zone Hockey Tournament 2006
By Craig Anderson

Wentworth High’s Annual trip to the Greater Manchester Zone Hockey Tournament was very successful for it’s team who for the fourth year took back the trophy that now rests with the other trophies in the Headteacher’s office.

The brilliant athletes of the Wentworth High School team were:
Craig Anderson (Me) Yr9
Anthony Wilkinson Yr9
Joe Tyrrell Yr7
Jason Newell Yr9
Joshua Hopwood Yr9
James Cook Yr9
Daniel Maycox Yr10

We had been training for weeks in the Friday Lunch Club and when the day arrived we were well prepared to take back the trophy we lost last year. This year we faced three teams in six rounds.

The first team was Brentwood Manor. We played extremely well winning an enormous 14-0 and then again in round 4 we beat them again 9-2.

The next team we played was New Bridge. We had to work a great deal harder against them the score ended up at: 8-1 Then again we played them in round 5 which was just as challenging but we still won with a final score of: 3 -2 but nothing compared to the last team.

This team was the team that beat us last year, they were the ones we knew were going to be our toughest opponents and this years rivals -The Lancastrians. Both matches against them were extremely challenging and we pushed ourselves to our limits. With the first match score being: 3-3. Despite the draw we pushed on and in an amazing, almost epic match in the finals, we won with a score of: 3-2.

The Kielder Challenge

On the 10th May myself and a group of seven other students from Wentworth High School, consisting of James Cook, Craig Anderson, Daniel Froggatt, Jason Newell, Anthony Wilkinson, Nathan Boyd and Chris Burrows, went on a trip to Haigh Hall in Wigan to participate in the Kielder Challenge.

The Kielder Challenge is where a group of teams compete against each other in a countryside environment to solve simple, practical problems such as negotiating giant rope mazes and completing giant jigsaws. The activities are designed so that every member of one team plays an active part in every challenge, contributing to the teams overall score.

In every challenge the teams are not only marked on how well they play the game, but also on the way they plan, work as a team and evaluate there performance. I think that the Wentworth High team did this excellently with overall levels of:

  • Planning

3.5

  • Teamwork

3.5

  • Performance

3.0

  • Evaluation

3.5

On the day our team had a lot of fun and we won the regional heat with a great team effort from everybody in the group. Sometime soon we will find out if we have progressed to the Grand Final which will be held in the fabulous Kielder Forest in Northumberland in September.
