WRITING CHALLENGE
Can you write me a story in just 50 words? Here are some examples:

Mistake
Bought coffee and kitkat. Sat in the café and drank.  Long-haired yob sits at the same table. I broke off a chocolate ‘finger’. He took the next. Angrily I took another. He grabbed the last. I left swearing.

Thrusting hands in my pocket I pulled out ……… an unwrapped kitkat.

Once …
Once I was the fastest runner in school; my paintings sold for profit; I was best in French and the most popular in my year. I captained the rugby team and teachers asked for my advice in chess. The examiners awarded me ‘double-A-double-star’ in 15 subjects!

Then I woke up.

Now you try. Hand your entry to Mr Riley (R45) or Mr Tyldsley (R40) by the last day of June and we will pick the best in each year. Prizes will be awarded.

BOOK REVIEWS

Point Blanc written by Anthony Horowitz
The story is about a MI6 agent called Alex rider who is on a mission to go to an academy in the French Alps. He was sent to find out why two of the children that went there had dads who died a couple of days after.  What he discovers when he is there at the school is that a man called DR Grief and MRS Stellenboch are cloning DR grief into the school children’s bodies and trying to take over the world with them.  Alex however, manages to tell the story about everything to MI6.

One of the good characters is wolf. In the book it doesn’t actually tell you his real name; Wolf is just a code name.  One of the best bits about him is that near the end he runs in to save Alex from being shot. He runs into the room and Mrs Stellenboch turns around and shoots him three times, once in the chest and one in each arm. He doesn’t actually die though because he has got body armour on.  As he falls he fires his machine gun and kills her.

I liked the book because it has lots of action and it has spies and a mystery to it. Also, it had lots of cool gadgets.

By Jack Floyd 8bxEnThe Fire Eaters written by David Almond

This book is all about a boy called Bobby Burns who lives in Keely Bay, Newcastle. It is based in the year 1962.

The opening is very outstanding with Bobby meeting McNulty who does some impossible tricks. There are lots of questions I want answers to. Who is Bobby Burns? Who is McNulty? And my main question is what illness has Bobby’s dad got? I only know that Bobby’s dad knew McNulty from the Second World War.

The book is very interesting and it made me read on. David Almond gets the reader’s attention by putting more characters in and making you want to know more about them. He won an award in 2003.

Monkey Madness

A few months ago my English class started an Arctic Monkeys project on interview writing. It all started when Mr. Tyldsley played us the Arctic Monkey’s hit song ‘‘I bet that you look good on the dance floor’’ whilst we completed a reading comprehension on the band. He told us that we would be writing an interview on the Arctic Monkeys.

We all wrote an interview and typed them up on the computer; Miss Collier did a big display with the best work. What we didn’t know was that Miss Collier sent pictures of our work and the display to the Arctic Monkeys’ record company (Domino). They sent back three brand new copies of their album along with badges for the whole class. They said how great the display was and how talented our class was. They also said they had never been contacted by a school before and what an original teaching idea it was.

There were only three albums so Mr Tyldsley and Miss Collier had to decide who to give them to. They chose three of the best interviews from the display, which turned out to be myself, Josh Martin and Holly Mainwaring. We all received an album and an Arctic Monkeys badge each. The head of English Mr Riley took pictures of the pupils chosen with Miss Collier. Miss Collier sent the pictures back to the record company saying a great big thank you!!!

Revision made Interesting at Worsley Old Hall

I am writing this article to tell you about our trip to Worsley Old Hall on April 27th 2006. We had a brilliant day and here’s why.

We left school at 9:30am and roughly arrived about 10:00am it was a beautiful day, really hot and the sun was shinning. We got split into two groups, 1 group in 1 room and the other group in the other room. Mr. Tyldsley took 1 group and Miss Collier took the other. Mr Tyldsley’s group, which was my group, started with tips and hints for the writing paper. He showed us how to write for different purposes which is very important in order to pass the writing paper. He also gave us hints and advice in case we panicked in the exam. Another
great tip was ‘TRAP’ which is:

Text type
Role
Audience
Purpose

At the end of our first lesson we had a 10 minute break and the hall staff were extremely helpful. They brought us drinks to keep us hydrated and Mr. Tyldsley brought crisps and chocolate. Later, after we had eaten, we went outside into the large lovely ground so we could cool down and just have a little break. The grounds were absolutely beautiful.

After our break we went into our second lesson with Miss Collier, where we our focus turned to the reading paper. Again we were given tips and hints for the exam; one which
was extremely helpful was colour coding. We were shown hoe to colour code parts of the question with the text in order to find examples and information easier and quicker. I found that this tip in particular made it easier and more understandable for us.

This revision day for us was really helpful and helped us in our exams. I really did appreciate it and I hope we do things like this again.
