News from the Year Groups

Year 7

As we approach the end of their first academic year at Wentworth, it’s nice to reflect on the generally positive transition the pupils have made from primary to secondary school.  The year group have just finished Progress and Optional tests, which so far have shown that the pupils are on track to achieve their target levels and this bodes well for future achievement.  The year group have taken an active part in all aspects of school life, ranging from bag packing at Morrison’s to dancing at Salford Reds Rugby ground.  I hope their enthusiasm along with their hard work, continues into year 8.

Year 8

The year 8 pupils have just completed their Optional tests and already I am hearing of some good results with pupils achieving higher than their predicted levels.  The Rugby team put up a brilliant display in the Sevens competition, following some inspired coaching and were narrowly defeated in the semi final by a very strong and large Wright Robinson team.  Becky Wild has been working hard on the Hands off Hope appeal, and even managed to get herself into the local paper.  Let’s hope she can maintain her dedication and support her cause.  With only half a term left, year 8 are encouraged to maintain their high standard of uniform and work hard for the remaining weeks.

Year 9

Exams and Revision……..

It’s been a busy time for Year 9 pupils recently.  With lots of revision leading up to the SATs exams and option choices to be made for next year, they’ve had a lot to think about!

In order to help Year 9 pupils with learning and revision techniques prior to their SATs, ‘Learning Performance’, the biggest study skills provider in the country, came into school and went through some study skills sessions with them.  These sessions were extremely successful, with pupils discovering new ways of retaining information and useful tips that they could use through revision at home.  The behaviour of all the pupils involved was outstanding and they proved to the ‘Learning Performance’ team, and staff at Wentworth, that they are a credit to the school.

Twenty Year 9 pupils recently took part in a one day course – Learn By Design – Numeracy of Sport.  The pupils took part in several workshops and used a lot of specialised sporting equipment.  They collected data and used this data to do various calculations involving formulae.

The day was a huge success and all the pupils involved seemed to enjoy it.  The behaviour of the group was excellent.  There was, however, one complaint – the Maths was TOO EASY!
New Uniform…….

From this September, all pupils at Wentworth will be required to wear the new school blazer.  The colour of the blazer was chosen to match the existing school colours, but a new school badge was needed to accompany the new look uniform.  A competition was therefore launched.  There were around 540 entrants to the competition, with some fantastic ideas and creations from pupils in all years.  The best design from each Year group was chosen by the Art Department and the school governors, and then an overall winner was chosen.  The winner of the badge competition for the whole school was Meghan McKay of 9T!  Well done Meghan!

Meghan’s design will be worn by all pupils of Wentworth High School as from September this year.

Volunteers…….

We are quickly coming to the end of the current school year and in an attempt to encourage more young people to become volunteers for the summer, Barnado’s recently came into school and delivered an assembly to Year 9 pupils.  The fantastic work done by the charity was explained to the pupils, so that they could increase their understanding of one of the many voluntary groups working in the community.

There was a huge response from Year 9 pupils this year and a large number of them have been filling out the forms to put themselves forward as volunteers for the summer.

Along with the Barnado’s appeal, the Learning Mentors have also been looking for a mature and reliable selection of Year 9 pupils to put themselves forward as peer mentors next year.  The selected pupils will work to ease the transition from primary to secondary school for the new pupils coming into Year 7 in September.  Again, a record number of pupils have been filling out forms to volunteer as Peer Mentors.  A very positive response from Year 9 pupils.

Well done!

And Finally…..

Rounders…….

The rounders season has got off to a brilliant start with Year 9 pupils playing as part of a mixed team with some pupils from Year 10.  They won their first match against St. George’s High School 19 ½ - 14.  We look forward to lots more success this summer!

Miss Garbutt - Yr 9 Acting Achievement Coordinator

Year 10

The good attendance throughout the Year has been maintained with 22 pupils now having received 100% Attendance Awards.

Achievement has also been recognised with 28 pupils receiving awards.

Pupils have been involved in a variety of activities including:

  • Peer mentoring – the pupils have been praised for the excellent job they have done.
  • Sports Coaching in Primary Schools – pupils have been complimented by all the schools that took part.
  • A Business Enterprise Project – the pupils involved are well on the way to making a profit!

In the Modular Science Tests the results are the best that any year has achieved at this point in year 10.  In general a very productive term for the pupils.

Year 11

On Friday 19th May 2006 the Year 11 Final Assembly took place.  Special guest, the Right Honourable Ian Stewart MP, presented the students with their Record of Achievement folder.  He addressed the assembly, telling the students that first appearances matter and, if they want to be successful in the future, how important their GCSE examinations are.  He said that of all the aspects of his job, being in school and speaking to young people was one of his most enjoyable.  At the end of the assembly many students took the opportunity to have their photograph taken with Mr Stewart.

On Monday 22nd May 2006 the GCSE examinations began.  I wish all students good luck in their examinations.  The ‘Celebration Dinner’ takes place on 20th June 2006 at Haigh Hall.  I look forward to meeting the students and staff at the dinner so we can celebrate fond memories of school and the end of the examinations.
