Science

Thank you for your interest in the Science Faculty here at Wentworth High School.

The Science Faculty is made up of six laboratories and one classroom.  From September 2006, we expect there to be eight full time Science specialists within the Faculty.

If you were to join the faculty, you would be joining one with a wealth of experience.  The Faculty currently comprises:

Mr KA Bardsley ( Head of Science)
Dr C Tebbs ( 2nd In Faculty)
Mr V Faldu (Lead Coach)
Mr RJ Walters
Mr M Doherty
Mr D Gregory
Mr C Holgate
Miss C MacKenzie

The Science Faculty has one excellent full time technician, Mr S Yates.

Each full time member of the Faculty currently has their own dedicated teaching room.  Four of the laboratories have been fully refurbished in the last four years.

In recent years, the Faculty has undergone a major investment and is extremely well resourced.  Within the Faculty there are three SMART boards and two sets of laptops for use exclusively within Science.

Our results over the last three years have shown a rising trend at Key Stage 3.  In 2005, we achieved our highest ever results, with 61% of pupils achieving Level 5 or better.

At Key Stage 4, 37% of our pupils achieved Grade CC or better.

At Key Stage 3, pupils follow the QCA Scheme Of Work.  We have both Exploring Science and Spotlight Science texts available to support our teaching.  Staff teach all subjects at Key Stage 3.

At Key Stage 4, pupils currently follow the AQA Modular Science (Double Award) GCSE.  With effect from September 2006, pupils will follow the AQA Science (Syllabus A) GCSE.  Wherever possible, staff teach within their specialism at Key Stage 4.

This is a time of great change in the teaching of Science at Key Stage 4.  If you were to join the Faculty, you would be expected to have a significant impact on the development and implementation of the new GCSE teaching scheme.

Provision in Science was deemed good during the last OfSTED inspection.  We are justifiably proud of the support offered and achievements made within our Faculty.  We believe that should you join us, you will be joining a successful, established Faculty.  You will, no doubt, quickly feel part of the team.

Once again, I would like to thank you for your interest in our Faculty and, whatever the outcome of your enquiry, wish you the best of luck for the future.

Yours faithfully,

Keith Bardsley, Head Of Science.
